Up, up, and over to Roncesvalles

DAVE:  first day is finally completed. Our journey from Saint Jean to Roncesvalles is now behind us.  We started at 7:30 and walked in to Roncesvalles around 5:00, tired, hungry, and sweaty. This is a long and grueling trip, butwe all made it and look forward to a kinder and gentler hike tomorrow.  Twenty kilometers tomorrow we think. No mountains? No problem.

The views of the countryside below us is spectacular and we had to be careful not to continually stop for photos. Every vista was stunning and pictures just don't seem to fully capture it.

The day began with partly cloudy skies, perfect for walking. Approaching the higher altitudes, we were enveloped in sporatic banks of clouds; what a rush! Nearing the summit, the wind blows unabated to the point where it's unnerving. Up, up, up, seemingly unending. At the end of the day, we reached our destination around 5:00pm, a walk of about 10 hours.

We arrived at the Albergue complex and were quickly funneled through the office for "processing" (getting our beds, having our Credencial stamped). There are peregrinos everywhere! A quick shower, a pilgrim dinner of pasta, baked trout, and dessert (10 EU), then bed.

This Posting will be short due to thespotty internet.  More in the days to come.
